I know we all want what's best for our child and we do our very best to provide everything we can to give them a comfortable life that is free from sickness and dirt.

However, due to some unfortunate situations, as much as we want our kids to be sick, they still do. 1.      With the advent of new sicknesses sprouting left and right, how do you feel your field of study can help in alleviating or avoiding these sicknesses?

Diseases are caused not by genetic predisposition alone but by the imbalance in health brought about by excess toxins and nutritional deficiencies that one has, given by their lifestyle and environmental factors.  Prevention and early detection of these imbalances without any invasive procedures can help build a cascade of well being starting with one person to a family to a community all the way to a country.  Usually when symptoms manifest the diseases have already taken a toll. On November 17, social media influencers and media gathered at Quezon Memorial Circle for the press launch of the Philippine Hortikultural Society Incorporated's event next year- Hortikultura Filipina 2018.

What is the HortiKultura Filipina 2018 all about?

It is a horticultural festival celebrated annually in the Philippines wherein indigenous and plant hybrids are being showcased in the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) in Metro Manila and the entire country.

It is the largest, most prestigious and most updated horticultural event in the country. It aims to take up the Philippines' journey as they will showcase our very own Philippine flora, endemic and indigenous plants and locally developed hybrids. Thus, it also has a purpose to show that the Philippines has the most diverse horticultural centres in Asia and the world.


In the press launch, several PHSI members talked about very interesting topics for plant lovers and garden enthusiasts.

Mr Zac Sarian provided different information how you can turn your passion in plants into business as a way of making 'decorative plants' he also gave a glimpse of how to start your very own gardening business- this is very good for potential entrepreneur out there.

Then Mr Boyet Ganigan talked about different trends of gardening. This is actually my first time to hear about setting up a garden in your condo, it may seem to be impossible but it's already made possible because of their creative minds.

I can still remember way back in highschool that I really love reading. I was more hooked in reading when my seatmate, Ally was bringing different books weekly. We managed to finish atleast 3 novels for a week- how crazy was that?! One of my most favorite books were from Paulo Cohello and of course, you could never go wrong with Nicholas Sparks' novels.

That's why when Edmund grows up, I want him to learn the value of reading.

Reading has a lot of benefits, not only it increase your vocabulary but it also enhances your imagination. Unfortunately, Reading has insurmountable benefits that cannot be neglected. It fosters individual growth that can spur national development.

Encouragingly, the Philippines do not log behind on basic literacy. In 2013, 96.5 percent of 74 million Filipinos 10 years old and over were basically literate. Basic or simple literacy – is the ability of a person to read and write with understanding a simple message in any language or dialect.

Furthermore, nine out of every ten Filipinos 10 to 64 years were functionally literate. Functional literacy includes not only reading and writing but also numeracy skills. The skills must be sufficiently advanced to enable the individual to participate fully and efficiently in activities commonly occurring in his life situation that require a reasonable capability of communicating by written language. A functional literate person is one who can at least read, write, compute and/or comprehend. Also, persons who graduated from high school or completed higher level of education are classified as functionally literate.

Though the statistics look good, the number significantly drops when comprehension or higher level of literacy is considered. Only 5 out of 10 elementary graduates can read, write, compute and comprehend. While this number improves as the students reach high school, only about 60% of the population actually reaches high school thus, attaining this level of literacy. Employment/ looking for work (28.8%), Family income not sufficient to send child to school (15.7), and lack of personal interest (14.9) are top 3 reasons for not attending school/ dropping out.


This November 24 & 25, the Gateway Gallery is holding its 2nd Mga Kwento ni Nanay: A Storytelling Workshop in partnership with Adarna House. 

The Gateway Gallery Reading Programs aims to foster literacy or love for reading and books among Filipino children. Furthermore, the workshop is designed to strengthen the reading campaign of the Gallery by involving parents, guardian, teachers and volunteers int he Community.

What to expect?

• Kuwentuhang Adarna sa Gateway Gallery is a monthly storytelling session for community children. The activity aims to promote book enjoyment through animated storytelling and activities. The stories are told by storytellers from Adarna House using Adarna books. The session ends with distribution of snacks and educational gifts.
• The Liwanag Reading Caravan is a storytelling – school campaign where celebrity storytellers visit nearby schools to promote the value and habit of reading. It also encourages the students to visit Gateway Gallery’s Liwanag Reading Corner for some “after-school reading”.
• Mga Kwento ni Nanay is a one-day storytelling workshop designed to strengthen the reading campaign of the Gallery by enlisting parents, guardian, teachers and volunteers in the community. Participants are briefed on the value of reading and helpful techniques to become effective storytellers. The activity not onlyemphasizes the benefits of reading but espouses spending quality time with the children for their overall development.

In the last 5 months since they launched their reading program, they were able to reach 230 children, trained nearly 100 storytellers and distributed more than 150 books.

I grew up watching Disney movies from That's so Raven down to Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Who could ever forget ever so famous High School Musical? Indeed, Disney is a big part of every kids' life. I bet every child would at least name one or two Disney Characters.

Christmas is fast approaching and this year, the classic couple- Mickey and Minnie as well as the characters of Disney's Tsum Tsum- an animated Youtube shorts are the featured characters in SM North EDSA's 45-foot Christmas display which they unveiled last November 10 in SM North EDSA The Block Atrium.




The magical event started with a "silent carolling" where hearing impaired students of the Philippine for the deaf as they serenade the audience with the classic Christmas carol "Do You Hear What I Hear?" with their sign language.



The event continues as SM Supermalls Senior Vice President for Operations Steven Tan and Disney Philippines Country Manager Veronica Cabalinan welcomed everyone to the event and shared how SM and Disney are helping spread the love and joy which is indeed the real magic of Christmas.


Before unveiling the Tsum Tsum Christmas Tree, hosts asked the participation from the audience to wave their portals to unlock the magic portal leading to the Tsum-tacular Christmas Village. As the portal slowly opened, ballerinas- as pixies led the crowd to the Christmas Village.



The unveiling of the most enchanting Christmas season ar SM Supermalls is part of the We Love Disney campaign together with SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc. and Tha Walt Disney Company to bring Disney brand closer to the hearts of Filipinos.

I remember when my mom tells me stories about my development when I was a child- from my first walk, the first song I've ever sung and how I started writing. I will always be grateful to have my parents' never-ending support in developing these skill and talent.

The third activity us a game called "Giant Block Game" it focused on being social for better learning. It teaches us how a simple imaginative game can develop their sense of leadership qualities in children through imagination, communication and collaboration.


Aside from these three activities that are based on three learning zones- physical, mental and socio-emotional development, this learning camp also emphasizing that nutrition also plays an important role in a child's brain development.
